Some may call this football weather, but the fun in the mud on grass fields can also come with an added danger to 1athletes.
"A kid goes to step in the ground and his foot 2slips and it just continues to go. So we've seen some hamstring injuries. Again, kind of that hamstring into the 3groin area. When you talk about the dangers of a wet field, that's what 4comes along with it."
In order to 5prevent injury, Wilson head coach Ryan Hetzler says that he has to change how the team prepares, and it starts with 6simulating what the game ball will be like.
"We will take a football and we'll 7dump it into water and then give it to him to try to play with, just to try to simulate that really rainy, wet game. If you don't prepare, then you don't know what it's like until you get there."
It could also change how they approach game day.
"Sometimes you'll see us go under center where the 8quarterback will now take the ball directly from the center, which just is less risky to do and less risky of a play to turn the ball over."
Well, what conditions on grass could make for some dangerous slips?
It gives a softer spot for them to 9land.
"The ground is a lot more forgiving. So it's softer. If you kind of 10get stuck and 11bent backwards a little bit, the ground gives a little bit more than like, let's say when we're playing on a 12turf field that doesn't bend at all."
Whether the field is green or brown, the goal remains the same, keeping the players safe under the Friday Night Lights.
