Lawmakers Push to Protect Babies From Toxins

Actor and mother Hilary Swank is among those championing California Assembly Bill 1901, a legislation that, if passed, would require 9manufacturers to fully 10disclose all ingredients in 11disposable diapers sold in the state.
"There's no federal law requiring diaper manufacturers to disclose the ingredients and materials used to make their diapers."
Democratic California Assembly member Marc Berman is behind the legislation.
"This is all about disclosure so that parents can make the best decisions they think they should make for their babies and for a product that is touching their baby's skin literally 24 hours a day."
Studies have found diapers can release 12volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, 13vapors from inks, dyes, 14adhesives, and 15bleaching agentsthat can cause skin and lung 16irritation and allergic reactions.
Some VOCs in diapers have also been linked to cancer.
A spokesperson for the Center for Baby and Adult Hygiene Products, which represents diaper manufacturers in the U.S., says its members are confident their products are safe.
"I don't want the manufacturer to disclose how they make the diapers. I just want them to disclose the ingredients."
AB 1901 has passed the legislature, and it's now heading to Governor Gavin Newsom's desk.

기저귀에 포함된 일부 VOC는 암과도 관련이 있는 것으로 나타났습니다.
미국의 기저귀 제조업체들을 대표하는 아기·성인 위생용품 센터 측 대변인은 회원사들이 자사 제품의 안전성에 확신을 갖고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
“저는 제조업체가 기저귀를 어떻게 만드는지 공개하기를 원하는 게 아닙니다. 단지 어떤 성분이 들어가는지만 공개하길 원하는 것입니다.”
AB 1901은 주 의회를 통과했으며, 이제 개빈 뉴섬 주지사에게 넘어갑니다.
