Earlier this year,1 iconic sneaker maker Allbirds 2stunned customers by announcing it was 3stepping away from footwear and 4reinventing itself as an artificial intelligence company called Smartbird. What sounds like an April Fool's 5prank has become one of the 6boldest examples yet of businesses betting their futures on AI. Our Clare Duffy spoke to the Smartbird president and CEO about the company's decision to go 7all in on artificial intelligence.
Clare Duffy, CNN Tech Reporter: The company that made these sneakers is dropping Allbirds for AI. News this spring that Allbirds was 8rebranding as Smartbird sent the company's shares 9soaring nearly 600%. But it also left some wondering whether it was a joke or a 10gimmick. New CEO Nadia Carlsten says she's very serious.
Nadia Carlsten, CEO, Smartbird: There's a lot backing this up. It's the fact that we have a new company now, very much 11dedicated to AI. We have a board that is committed and this is something that I have done before. So I know that it's a market that exists and something that we can deliver.
Claire Duffy: Smartbird wants to provide 12computing power for companies to run AI systems, a business that is 13dominated by giants like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft.
Nadia Carlson: AI is so hot right now. This is maybe an unusual way to start an AI company, but it wouldn't be unusual for a company that wants to provide value to choose to be an AI.
Claire Duffy: It's not the first time a 14struggling 15legacy company has made a 16bold bet on a 17hyped-up new technology, and it doesn't always 18pan out. In 2018, film company Kodak announced it was going all in on 19blockchain and 20launching its own 21cryptocurrency. While that news 22initially sent the company's 23stock up, the effort quickly 24fizzled. Last year, Kodak warned investors it was 25on the verge of 26bankruptcy.
