Bond Market Panic: Why You Should Care

The summer 1sell-off in the 2bond market is 3putting the squeeze on household borrowers.

"Not everybody's in the middle of trying to buy a house or is about to buy a car. But if you are one of those people, then effectively what happens when Treasury rates go up is that your life becomes more expensive."

The U.S. 4national debt just topped a record $40 trillion.

The 5stagnant situation around the Strait of Hormuz has kept global oil prices high and U.S. inflation remains 6stubborn.

Investors' confidence in the U.S. economy has 7slipped.

They're selling off their U.S. government bonds and demanding higher interest or 8yields from the government when they buy new ones because federal debt seems more risky.

"Here's the simple story. We have too much debt. And people, most international buyers, want to buy less U.S. debt."

When it becomes more costly for the government to borrow, it becomes more costly for consumers to borrow because banks use those yields as a 9benchmark for setting interest rates on everything from mortgages to auto loans.

"If you're somebody who's already 10struggling with other kinds of payments on groceries and on gas for your car and things like that, and interest rates are going up, well, your life just got a whole lot more expensive."

In recent weeks, the 11Treasury Department announced it would buy back more of its debt to try to 12tamp down the rise in yields.
