Small Businesses Hurt by the Dreaded Rain Icon

Since 2012, the Brooklyn Beach shop has called the Coney Island 3boardwalk home. Along with running the shop, Maya Miller's day-to-day 4revolves around the forecast.
"This is the same for any beach town or any area that is so 5heavily 6reliant on the forecast, and I say on the forecast, I don't say on the weather."
When we stopped by, the forecast showed rain, but outside was nothing but sun, and on the hour-by-hour forecast, the chance of rain doesn't appear until the evening.
"Did you ever imagine that your day-to-day would be 7dictated by an emoji?"
"No, no, I thought it was actual weather and if school's out."
"Often it just takes clicking on that app and 8digging a little bit 9beneath that little icon, and there's usually more 10context."
Dr. Marshall Shepard is an expert in this field.
He says people have become reliant on their weather apps without fully knowing how to 11digest the data in them.
"We are seeing this 12degradation in sort of context and use of apps, even though we're in probably one of the most sort of accurate periods of weather forecasting and technology that we've ever seen."
While weather apps are great tools, Shepard says they should 13be paired with 14expertise from 15meteorologists.
For Miller, she wishes the apps told a more complete story.
"For the apps themselves show 3 icons: early morning, day and night."

“아시다시피 그날 하루가 어떤 일기예보가 나오느냐에 따라 달라집니다.”
브루클린 비치 숍은 2012년부터 코니아일랜드 보드워크를 터전으로 영업해 왔습니다. 가게를 운영하는 것과 함께 마야 밀러의 일상은 일기예보를 중심으로 돌아갑니다.
“이건 어느 해변 도시에서나, 또는 일기예보에 크게 의존하는 지역이라면 어디에서나 마찬가지입니다. 저는 ‘날씨’가 아니라 ‘일기예보’에 의존한다고 말하고 싶습니다.”
저희가 들렀을 당시 예보에는 비가 내릴 것으로 나와 있었지만, 밖에는 햇빛만 내리쬐고 있었고, 시간대별 예보를 보면 비가 내릴 가능성은 저녁이 되어서야 나타났습니다.
“하루하루가 이모티콘 하나에 좌우될 거라고 생각해 본 적 있으세요?”
“아니요, 전혀요. 그게 실제 날씨를 보여주는 거라고 생각했어요. 학교가 쉬는지 여부를 알려주는 것처럼요.”
“대개는 그 앱을 클릭해서 그 작은 아이콘 아래의 내용을 조금만 더 살펴보면 됩니다. 그러면 보통 더 많은 정보를 확인할 수 있습니다.”
마셜 셰퍼드 박사는 이 분야의 전문가입니다.
그는 사람들이 날씨 앱의 데이터를 어떻게 해석해야 하는지 충분히 이해하지 못한 채 날씨 앱에 의존하고 있다고 말합니다.
“날씨 예보와 관련 기술은 지금까지 그 어느 때보다 정확해졌지만, 앱의 정보를 맥락에 맞게 이해하고 활용하는 방식은 오히려 저하되고 있습니다.”
날씨 앱이 유용하기는 하지만, 셰퍼드 박사는 기상 전문가의 전문 지식과 함께 활용해야 한다고 말합니다.
밀러는 앱이 날씨에 대한 보다 종합적인 정보를 제공해 주기를 바랍니다.
“앱에서 이른 아침, 낮, 밤으로 나눠 세 가지 아이콘을 보여줬으면 해요.”
