We start with a 6bite-sized bug causing 7supersized problems. Some tick bites can 8trigger a condition that makes people allergic to 9red meat. Now, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is 10launching a new 11initiative to 12combat 13Lyme disease and other 14tick-related illnesses. The initiative includes funding for tick control programs and more research into 15alpha-gal syndrome, a condition that's been spreading to more parts of the country. CNN's Meg Terrell explains.
“People don't want to go outside anymore. They don't want to go hiking. They are scared to 16go gardening or even walk the dog.”
CNN Correspondent: In Martha's Vineyard, an island people visit especially in the summer to enjoy its gorgeous beaches and trails and great food scene, ticks are making life difficult.
“We're surrounded by what is apparently a tick haven.”
Tom Murphy, his wife Chris, and several of their neighbors have all contracted an allergy called alpha-gal spread by ticks. It makes them allergic to red meat.
Tom Murphy, Martha’s Vineyard Resident: I had a steak dinner with my son and went to bed and everything was fine, everything was normal and about two or so in the morning I woke up and I was having trouble breathing.
CNN Correspondent: So, what were the things you can't eat, anyway.
Tom Murphy: Well, you can't eat beef, no lamb, no pork, no 17venison. A lot of people can't eat 18dairy.
CNN Correspondent: It's spread by a tick called the 19lone star, which can transfer a sugar 20molecule with its bite that can 21spark the allergy.

톰 머피와 그의 아내 크리스, 그리고 이웃 여러 명은 모두 진드기에 의해 전파되는 알파갈 증후군을 앓게 됐습니다. 이 질환에 걸리면 붉은 고기에 알레르기 반응을 보이게 됩니다.
톰 머피, 마서스빈야드 주민: 아들과 함께 스테이크를 먹고 잠자리에 들었는데, 처음에는 아무 이상이 없었습니다. 그런데 새벽 2시쯤 갑자기 숨쉬기가 힘들어져 잠에서 깼습니다.
CNN 기자: 그렇다면 지금은 어떤 음식을 먹을 수 없나요?
톰 머피: 소고기는 물론이고 양고기, 돼지고기, 사슴고기까지 먹을 수 없습니다. 많은 환자는 유제품도 먹지 못합니다.
CNN 기자: 이 질환은 론스타진드기(Lone Star tick)에 물리면서 전파됩니다. 이 진드기는 사람을 물 때 당(糖) 분자를 체내에 전달하는데, 이것이 알레르기 반응을 유발할 수 있습니다.
