Meta’s New Smart Glasses Aim to Ditch Smartphones

Clare Duffy, CNN Business Writer: “Ah, whoa. It's crazy.” These are the new Meta Ray-Ban display glasses, the next generation of 1AI-powered2wearables. Meta is making a bet that with these glasses, users won't need to spend so much time looking down at their phone. Unlike previous versions, which you could only 3interact with via voice and audio, these feature a tiny display inside the lens. And they come with what's called a 4neural wristband, so you can 5navigate simply with hand and finger gestures.
So, what I'm seeing right now on this little display, it looks like, you know, the homepage of Spotify for whatever song that you're currently listening to. So, you've got the play button, the forward and backward button, you can 6shuffle. Yeah, and then when I do the volume, I see the little volume button open up. Cool.
They're a bit 7bulkier than previous versions of the Meta Ray Bands. They still look and feel more or less like regular glasses, just slightly thicker and heavier. People around you won't be able to see what you're seeing on the glasses display. That's by design, so your messages or photos 8remain private. It's probably going to take some getting used to for most people to interact with the world around you while seeing a little display in front of your eye.
But I was surprised by how high-quality the display was. You're going to have to 9take my word for it on this one because you can only see it if you're wearing them. And I liked that you can turn the display on and off, so if you're doing focused work or walking around outside, you won't be 10distracted. And I did find the neural wristband gestures 11intuitive to learn.
You can capture and view photos and videos. There is 12live captioning, navigation, video calling. You can ask AI about your surroundings, and also view and respond to messages, all of which I tried in a mostly successful brief 13demo.
You may remember when Google tried to do this back in 2013 with Google Glass, but that product 14flopped because it was expensive, unfashionable, and had limited 15functionality. This is another way for Meta to get its AI technology to be a bigger part of our daily lives, and it'll test how ready the world is for more 16advanced wearables.

지금 제가 이 작은 디스플레이에서 보고 있는 화면은, 마치 스포티파이 홈 화면처럼 현재 듣고 있는 곡이 표시됩니다. 재생 버튼, 앞뒤 이동 버튼, 셔플 기능도 있고요. 볼륨을 조절하면 작은 볼륨 아이콘이 뜹니다. 정말 신기하네요.
이 안경은 기존 메타 레이밴 모델보다 약간 더 두툼합니다. 하지만 여전히 일반 안경과 크게 다르지 않은 외형이고, 단지 조금 더 두껍고 무거운 정도입니다. 주변 사람들은 내가 보고 있는 화면을 볼 수 없는데, 이는 메시지나 사진 같은 개인 정보 보호를 위한 설계입니다. 눈앞에 작은 화면을 띄운 채로 주변 환경과 상호작용하는 데는 다소 적응 시간이 필요할 수도 있습니다.
하지만 디스플레이 화질은 예상보다 훨씬 뛰어났습니다. 이건 직접 써봐야만 알 수 있는데, 착용한 사람만 볼 수 있기 때문에 제 말을 믿어주셔야 할 것 같네요. 또한 화면을 켜고 끌 수 있어서, 집중해서 일하거나 야외에서 걷고 있을 때 방해받지 않도록 조절할 수 있는 점도 좋았습니다. 그리고 뉴럴 손목밴드 제스처 역시 배우기 쉽고 직관적이었습니다.
사진과 동영상 촬영 및 감상이 가능하고, 실시간 자막, 내비게이션, 영상 통화 기능도 제공합니다. 주변 환경에 대해 AI에게 질문할 수 있고, 메시지를 확인하고 답장하는 것도 가능합니다. 짧은 체험이었지만 대부분의 기능이 원활하게 작동했습니다.
2013년, 구글이 ‘구글 글래스’로 비슷한 시도를 했던 것을 기억하는 분들도 계실 겁니다. 하지만 가격이 비싸고 디자인이 투박했으며, 기능도 제한적이어서 결국 실패로 끝났죠. 이번 제품은 메타가 AI 기술을 우리의 일상에 더 깊숙이 스며들게 하려는 또 하나의 시도이며, 세상이 얼마나 진보된 웨어러블 기기에 준비돼 있는지를 시험하는 계기가 될 것입니다.
