A Modern Noah: 19-Year Journey to Document Wildlife

Joel Sartore, Photographer, National Geographic: The goal of the 1Photo Ark is to get the public to care about all the species that we share the 2planet with. We're at more than 17,000 species now. I started with National Geographic more than 30 years ago. Then, about 19 years ago, I had a chance to 3reset and restart my career. My wife got sick. She's fine today, but she was 4in treatment for cancer for about a year. And we had three little kids, so I stayed at home. And I thought, what can I do that would allow us to see all 5creatures great and small, and really look them in the eye, 6undistracted, 7give them an equal voice by not having any size 8comparisons around them, and so that's how the photo art got started. Most of the animals 9on the face of the earth, you could fit in the palm of your hand and they're never going to get a full story anywhere. So this is their chance to shine and really tell their stories. The photo art doesn't just exist to document, but we 10give lift to the good places that are doing good work.
I hope these pictures continue to go to work long after we're all dead and gone, you know, like just to show people what it looked like and hopefully the world doesn't look too 11vastly different. I really hope the 12legacy is to continue to 13inspire people to care about nature and all that's in it, but you know, will people be smart enough to realize that our 14fate and the fate of the natural world are the same?

조엘 사토리, 사진작가, 내셔널지오그래픽: 이 사진 프로젝트의 목표는 우리가 이 행성을 함께 살아가는 모든 종에 대해 사람들이 관심을 갖도록 하는 것입니다. 현재까지 기록한 종만 해도 1만 7천 종이 넘습니다. 저는 30년이 넘게 내셔널지오그래픽에서 활동해 왔고, 약 19년 전 제 커리어를 완전히 새롭게 시작할 기회를 맞게 되었습니다. 아내가 병에 걸렸기 때문입니다. 지금은 완치되었지만, 당시 약 1년 동안 암 치료를 받아야 했습니다. 게다가 어린 아이 셋이 있었기에 저는 집에 머물며 가족을 돌보게 되었죠. 그러면서 ‘우리가 크고 작은 모든 생명체를 만나, 방해받지 않은 채 그들의 눈을 똑바로 바라보고, 크기 비교 없이 모두에게 동등한 목소리를 줄 수 있는 일은 무엇일까?’를 고민하게 되었습니다. 그렇게 해서 이 사진 프로젝트가 시작됐습니다. 지구상의 대부분의 동물은 손바닥 안에 들어올 만큼 작고, 그들은 어디에서도 제대로 된 이야기를 들려줄 기회를 얻지 못합니다. 이 프로젝트는 바로 그런 존재들이 빛을 발하고, 자신의 이야기를 진정으로 들려줄 수 있는 기회입니다. 이 사진들은 단순히 기록으로만 존재하는 것이 아니라, 세상을 더 나은 곳으로 만들기 위해 좋은 일을 하고 있는 현장에 힘을 보태는 역할도 합니다.
저는 이 사진들이 우리가 모두 세상을 떠난 뒤에도 오랫동안 사람들에게 영향을 주었으면 합니다. 사람들이 “그때 세상은 이랬구나” 하고 알 수 있도록 말이죠. 그리고 세상이 지금과 크게 다르지 않기를 진심으로 바랍니다. 이 작업의 유산이 자연과 그 안에 존재하는 모든 생명에 대한 관심과 사랑을 계속해서 불러일으키는 것이었으면 합니다. 하지만 과연 사람들은 우리의 운명과 자연의 운명이 하나라는 사실을 충분히 현명하게 깨닫게 될까요?
