CNN Correspondent: Sharks 1feasting together, a sight rarely seen, but observers witnessed this 2fascinating gathering 3off the coast of Hawaii's Big Island.
Dr. Molly Scott, Marine Researcher, University of Hawaii: 4To our knowledge, this is the first study of its kind to document the two of them in a 5feeding aggregation together.
CNN Correspondent: The study published in Frontiers in Fish Science 6highlights the surprisingly peaceful feeding of at least 12 sharks from two distinct species tiger sharks and oceanic white-tip sharks.
Dr. Molly Scott: Sharks tend to be 7solitary hunters. They generally feed alone. We were really excited by the fact that everybody seemed to be getting along really well at the feeding aggregation.
CNN Correspondent: These two species are very different. Oceanic white tips are highly 8migratory, while tiger sharks 9inhabit coastal areas 10year-round. Yet the observers saw how social dynamics among the sharks allowed for this peacefully shared meal.
Dr. Molly Scott: The two were rarely together in space and time. There was kind of a, what you would call a 11social hierarchy, which was kind of 12dominated by size.
CNN Correspondent: The study suggests sharks are not 13vicious and aggressive as often 14portrayed in movies.
Dr. Molly Scott: There were three people in the water documenting this event on camera over eight and a half hours and 15at no point in timedid any sharks bother any of the photographers.
CNN Correspondent: Researchers hope this provides a less 16frightening perspective of sharks while still reminding people to respect their space and avoid 17provoking or 18antagonizing them.
