Living Donors Save Amid Rise in Liver Disease

According to the American Liver Foundation, about a quarter of the people on the 1liver transplant list, they will die waiting. That's a number the foundation says is unacceptable. As a result, it's launched a new 2initiative trying to increase the number of 3donors and the number of 4transplants.
"I was 5literally within a week or two of 6mortality."
Bill Houston is one of hundreds of thousands of Americans who have had a liver transplant.
"But in early 2019 is when the physical symptoms of liver issues started to show up and it really was a 6 to 8 month process of a rapid decline."
7Tens of millions in the U.S. suffer from some form of liver disease with many not knowing. The disease can be caused by a variety of things, including 8infections, lifestyle choices such as long-term alcohol use, 9genetics and 10autoimmune disorders.
"There are 9,300 people waiting for liver transplants right now. 11Tragically, 25% of those people are going to die waiting."
To help address the 12shortage, the American Liver Foundation has launched the Living Donor Network. Most transplants come from those who have 13passed away, with living donors often knowing the person their liver will go to.
But this new initiative creates a database to connect people who wish to donate part of their liver to someone they don't know, with transplant centers nationwide.
"Help someone in need, giving this gift of life. It's the 14first of its kind. It's never been created before."
As for Bill, after decades of suffering from alcohol use disorder that led to his needing a transplant, he's now an advocate working to help and educate others dealing with 15substance abuse and the impacts of liver disease.
"We're losing too many people. There's no reason not to save all of us."

미국 간재단(American Liver Foundation)에 따르면 간이식 대기자 중 약 4분의 1은 이식을 기다리다 숨지게 됩니다. 재단은 이 수치를 “결코 받아들일 수 없는 상황”이라고 지적하며, 기증자 수와 이식 건수를 늘리기 위한 새로운 이니셔티브를 시작했습니다.

빌 휴스턴은 간이식을 받은 수십만 명의 미국인 가운데 한 명입니다.
“2019년 초부터 간 질환 증상이 나타나기 시작했고, 불과 6~8개월 만에 급격히 악화되었습니다.”
미국에서는 수천만 명이 간 질환을 앓고 있지만, 상당수는 자신이 병을 가지고 있다는 사실조차 알지 못합니다. 간 질환은 감염, 과도한 음주, 유전, 자가면역질환 등 다양한 요인으로 인해 발생할 수 있습니다.
“현재 간이식을 기다리는 사람은 9,300명입니다. 안타깝게도 이 중 25%는 기다리다 사망하게 됩니다.”
이식 대기자 부족 문제를 해결하기 위해 미국 간재단은 ‘생체 기증자 네트워크(Living Donor Network)’를 출범했습니다. 대부분의 간 이식은 사망한 기증자에게서 이루어지며, 생존 기증의 경우에는 기증자가 수혜자를 알고 있는 사례가 많습니다.
하지만 이번 이니셔티브는 전혀 모르는 사람에게 간 일부를 기증하려는 사람들을 전국의 이식 센터와 연결하는 데이터베이스를 구축한 것입니다.
“도움이 필요한 누군가에게 생명의 선물을 줄 수 있습니다. 이런 형태의 시스템은 이번이 처음으로, 이전에는 존재하지 않았습니다.”
오랜 기간 알코올 사용 장애로 고통받다 간이식을 받은 빌은, 지금은 같은 문제를 겪는 이들을 돕고 간질환의 위험성을 알리는 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.
“너무 많은 이들이 목숨을 잃고 있습니다. 우리가 모두 살아야 할 이유가 있습니다.”
