It's Not Just You, Scams Are Targeting Everyone

If you're checking your email every day, chances are you'll see a subject line that might make you raise a brow.
"Right away, I'm thinking to myself, is this something that I've been expecting?"
According to a CNET survey, 96% of U.S. adults receive at least one 1scam email, text, or phone call each week, 90% say they get scam emails 2on a weekly basis.
CNET's Dashia Milden says the scam calls and texts are 3surging, too.
"My phone rings 4constantly, and that’s at 83% — still very high — followed by text messages, of course, at 82%."
In 2024 alone, U.S. adults reported losing a 5collective 6whopping $470 million in those 7sneaky tech scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission.
Milden says 8fraudsters have gotten so good at crafting their messages and creating 9a sense of urgency that people need to stay 10vigilant — especially on phone calls.
"If you don't know who that person is after you have said hello, don't say anything further. Hang up. And the reason why I say that is so important is because artificial intelligence has 11evolved to where scammers are actually able to 12clone your voice and your responses — to unfortunately use those for scams later."
Aside from following basic internet safety guidelines, such as not clicking on unknown links and not answering unknown calls, Milden says there are other ways to keep criminals from impacting your finances.
"Right now is a really good time to 13freeze your credit, so that way, if they happen to get access to your information — hey, your credit's already frozen."

CNET 조사에 따르면, 미국 성인의 96%가 매주 최소 한 건의 사기 이메일이나 문자, 또는 전화를 받고 있으며, 90%는 매주 사기 이메일을 받는다고 답했습니다.
CNET의 대샤 밀든은 사기 전화와 문자 메시지도 급증하고 있다고 밝혔습니다.
“제 전화는 끊임없이 울립니다. 전화 사기가 83%로 여전히 매우 높고, 그 뒤를 이어 문자 메시지가 82%입니다.”
연방거래위원회에 따르면, 2024년 한 해에만 미국 성인들이 교묘한 기술 사기로 입은 피해액은 총 4억 7천만 달러에 달하는 것으로 집계됐습니다.
밀든은 사기범들이 메시지를 정교하게 만들고 긴박감을 조성하는 데 매우 능숙해졌기 때문에, 특히 전화 통화 시 각별한 주의가 필요하다고 경고합니다.
"‘안녕하세요’라고 인사한 뒤 상대가 누구인지 모른다면, 더 이상 말을 하지 말고 전화를 끊으세요. 제가 이렇게 강조하는 이유는, 인공지능 기술이 발전하면서 사기범들이 실제로 당신의 목소리와 응답을 복제해 나중에 사기에 악용할 수 있기 때문입니다.”
밀든은 낯선 링크를 클릭하지 않거나 모르는 전화에 응답하지 않는 등 기본적인 인터넷 보안 수칙 외에도, 재정적 피해를 막기 위한 다른 방법들이 있다고 말합니다.
“지금은 신용을 동결해두기에 아주 좋은 시기입니다. 누군가 당신의 정보에 접근하더라도 ‘이미 신용이 동결돼 있다’며 대비할 수 있으니까요.”
