Bill To Ban Transgender Students From Sports

On Wednesday, Republican State Representative Elizabeth Caruso presented a bill while 2surrounded by students of all ages from across the state.
"Without single sex sports, there can be no 3equal athletic opportunities."
The 4proposed bill is an act to 5ensure 6equity and safety in athletics, restrooms, changing rooms and housing at elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools.
"This bill will ensure that no girl or woman in Maine will ever again have to feel that they have no choice but to 7drop out of a team."
Angelina Boisvert, high school senior athlete who supports this bill, says it's not fair to compete against transgender athletes.
"I've worked so hard just to gain speed and strength, just to 8get like that little bit of edge on other 9athletes. But if there is men competing in our sports, they 10biologically already have that advantage, and I just don't think that it's fair."
But this bill could face 11legal issues.
"Is this bill going to be in 12conflict with Title IX?"
"So this bill is not in conflict with Title IX."
"Title IX requires schools to allow transgender girls to 13participate in girls' sports."
This is one of multiple bills 14submitted this session related to transgender students participating in female sports.
Senate Majority Leader Teresa Pierce says Democrats want to protect the rights of kids, based on the law.
"We're going to protect all kids in Maine. They deserve to be protected. Their families deserve to be protected."

수요일, 엘리자베스 카루소 공화당 주 하원의원은 주 전역에서 온 다양한 연령대의 학생들로 둘러싸인 가운데 법안을 발표했습니다.
“단일 성별 스포츠가 없다면 평등한 운동 기회를 보장할 수 없습니다.”
이 법안은 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교 및 대학에서 운동 경기, 화장실, 탈의실, 기숙사 이용의 형평성과 안전을 보장하기 위한 법안입니다.
“이 법안이 통과되면 메인주의 어떤 여학생이나 여성도 다시는 팀을 떠날 수밖에 없다고 느끼지 않게 될 것입니다.”
이 법안을 지지하는 고등학교 3학년 운동선수인 안젤리나 보이스버트는 트랜스젠더 선수와 경쟁하는 것은 불공평하다고 말합니다.
“저는 다른 선수들보다 조금이라도 우위를 점하기 위해 스피드와 힘을 키우려고 정말 열심히 노력해왔습니다. 하지만 만약 남성들이 우리 종목에 출전한다면, 생물학적으로 이미 신체적 우위를 갖고 있어 공정하지 않다고 생각합니다.”
하지만 이 법안은 법적인 문제에 직면할 수 있습니다.
“이 법안이 타이틀 IX와 상충할 수 있나요?”
“이 법안은 타이틀 IX와 상충되지 않습니다.”
“타이틀 IX는 학교가 트랜스젠더 여학생들이 여학생 스포츠에 참가할 수 있도록 허용해야 한다고 요구합니다.”
이 법안은 이번 회기에 제출된 트랜스젠더 학생들의 여성 스포츠 참여와 관련된 여러 법안 중 하나입니다.
테레사 피어스 상원 원내대표는 민주당이 법에 근거하여 아이들의 권리를 보호하고자 한다고 말합니다.
“우리는 메인주의 모든 아이들을 보호할 것이며, 그들은 보호받을 자격이 있습니다. 그들의 가족들도 보호받을 자격이 있습니다.”
