The dog food which I here in Los Angeles in Skid Row is taken off. It's been getting low fairly quickly so it tells me there's a lot of pets that are getting what they need. Anyone who lives in this area can come through when they want and take as much dog food as they need to their pet. We keep cat food down here too. We've given somewhere in the neighborhood of 800-900 bags of food. I wish I could be , out of work. As our gets worse, and it is getting worse, we know that, more people are on the streets, have a pet.

“He's a nice dog, huh?” “How old are you?”

When I'm able to care for these pets, keep them healthy and keep them with their owner. Their owner stands a better chance of themselves getting off the streets. Their pet 6companion is 7instrumental in that.

“Hector, how you doing, man?”

And streets and the people I meet, the dogs I help, we will see months later, a year later, and the changes and the 8reform. It's pretty magical.

Like rain. Rain was a little tiny 9runt with 10crooked legs.

“We noticed her, she had 11muscle atrophy.”

We didn't know how big she was going to grow and what kind of 12deformities, if any, she would have.

"I had to keep her warm so that she wouldn't lose more muscle from shaking. And then her bones started growing faster than her muscles. She's so big and very smart. All the 13physical therapy we did on her worked out just great."

“Oh, good boy. Oh, you do have a little thing.”

It’s 14estimated that we've seen upwards 2,000 animals and last year was our biggest year 15to date. So, we're just going to improve on that. She also has some 16flea issues, but she's healthy. She looks good. Really 17the sky's the limit. I'm just taking one week, one month at a time.

제가 로스앤젤레스 스키드 로우에서 시작한 개 사료 저장실이 문을 닫았습니다. 사료가 꽤 빨리 바닥을 드러내고 있는 것을 보면 사료를 필요로 하는 반려동물이 많다는 것을 알 수 있습니다. 이 지역에 사는 사람이라면 누구나 원할 때 와서 반려동물을 돌보는 데 필요한 만큼의 개 사료를 가져갈 수 있습니다. 고양이 사료도 이곳에 보관하고 있죠. 지금까지 약 800~900봉지의 사료를 기부했어요. 사업을 접고 일을 그만두고 싶어요. 저는 노숙자 위기가 점점 더 심해지면서 길거리에서 반려동물을 키우는 사람들이 늘어나고 있다는 것을 알고 있습니다.

“참 좋은 개네요.” “몇 살인가요?”

제가 (이 사업을 계속해서) 동물들을 서포트할 수 있다면, 아이들은 건강하게 주인과 함께 지낼 수 있게 됩니다. 그렇게 되면 주인이 길거리 생활에서 벗어날 가능성이 높아집니다. 반려동물은 그 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 것이죠.

“헥터, 잘 지냈어?”

제가 만나는 거리와 사람들, 제가 돕는 개들은 몇 달 후, 그리고 1년 후에는 변화와 개혁을 마주하게 될 것입니다. 정말 마법 같은 일이죠.

레인의 경우에도 그렇습니다. 레인은 다리가 비뚤어진 작은 녀석이었어요.

“우리는 레인의 근육 위축을 발견했습니다.”

레인의 몸집이 얼마나 커질지, 어떤 기형이 생길지 알 수 없었습니다.

“떨림으로 인해 근육이 더 이상 손실되지 않도록 아이를 따뜻하게 해줘야 했습니다. 그러자 뼈가 근육보다 더 빨리 자라기 시작했어요. 정말 크고 똑똑한 아이였어요. 우리가 해준 모든 물리 치료는 정말 효과가 있었어요.”

“오, 착하지. 오, 여기 뭔가 작은 혹이 있네.”

지금까지 저는 2,000마리 이상의 동물을 도와준 것으로 추정되고요, 작년은 지금까지 중에서 가장 많은 수의 동물을 도와준 해였습니다. 그래서 우리는 그 점을 개선할 것입니다. 벼룩 문제가 좀 있긴 하지만 건강하죠. 좋아 보이네요. 저희에게 한계란 없습니다. 한 번에 일주일, 한 달씩만 쉬고 계속 일하고 있어요.
