San Francisco's Historic Cable Cars Face Cuts

Those iconic cable cars which climb halfway to the stars may not be climbing anywhere soon thanks to a 1looming Muni 2budget deficit. It's not what first-time tourists want to hear.
"Can you imagine if they weren't here anymore?"
"That isn't San Francisco anymore then. So that belongs to San Francisco. That's very famous in the whole world."
Cable cars, one of the main draws to the famous Buena Vista restaurant on Hyde Street, where Tony Poon is manager.
"It's impossible San Francisco don't have cable car. This is iconic and our restaurant here is a 3destination for all the tourists."
"This is the conversation that's been a little, frankly, terrifying to me."
4SFMTA director Jeffrey Tumlin says with a looming deficit of nearly 300 million by 5fiscal year 2026-2027, everything is 6on the table for possible cuts, including the 7suspension of three cable car lines, California, Mason and Hyde, and the F Market streetcars, which could save an 8estimated $33 million annually. Tumlin says the 9stakes are real.
"As all of you know, the 10lingering effects of COVID and particularly work from home has had a 11devastating impact on the SFMTA budget."
He says the failure of Prop L, which could have generated $25 million for transit, and the new Trump administration could make identifying new revenue sources challenging. Those who work on the cable cars can't believe suspending service is even being suggested.
"It's sad that they're even thinking about shutting down this iconic, and it's the only national, moving 12national monument."
Former mayor Willie Brown, who helped Dianne Feinstein save the cable cars in the 1980s, is 13outraged.
"I'm telling you that the person who even considers because of the budget problems saying cable cars shouldn't be out there should be fired immediately."
Tomlin says Muni is now collaborating with the entire region to help close the budget gap and find new funding sources.
"We have enough time to solve the problem, but only if we t14ake decisive action."

하늘높이까지 이어지는 듯한 상징적인 케이블카가 무니 예산 적자로 인해 조만간 더 이상 운행되지 않을 수도 있습니다. 처음 방문한 관광객들이 듣고 싶은 소식은 아닙니다.
“케이블카가 더 이상 이곳에 없는 게 상상이 되나요?”
“그럼 거긴 더 이상 샌프란시스코가 아니에요. 케이블카는 샌프란시스코의 것이죠. 그건 전 세계적으로 정말 유명하잖아요.”
토니 푼이 매니저로 있는 하이드 스트리트의 유명한 부에나 비스타 레스토랑의 주요 볼거리 중 하나는 케이블카입니다.
“샌프란시스코에 케이블카가 없다는 것은 말도 안 되는 일이죠. 이곳은 상징적인 곳이며 저희 레스토랑은 모든 관광객이 찾는 곳입니다.”
“솔직히 말해서 좀 걱정되는 내용이긴 합니다.”
SFMTA의 제프리 텀린 이사는 2026~2027년까지 3억 달러의 적자가 예상되는 상황에서 캘리포니아, 메이슨, 하이드 등 3개 케이블카 노선과 F 마켓 전차 운행 중단을 포함해 연간 약 3300만 달러를 절감할 수 있는 삭감 방안을 검토 중이라고 밝혔습니다. 텀린은 이 금액이 현실적이라고 말합니다.
“여러분 모두 아시다시피, 코로나19의 장기화, 특히 재택근무의 영향은 SFMTA 예산에 막대한 영향을 미쳤습니다.”
그는 대중교통에 2,500만 달러를 조달할 수 있었던 발의안 L의 실패와 새로운 트럼프 행정부로 인해 새로운 수입원을 찾는 것이 어려울 수 있다고 말합니다. 케이블카에서 일하는 사람들은 서비스 중단이 고려되고 있다는 사실조차 믿을 수 없습니다.
