Blind Students Experience Eclipse W/ Special Device
특수 기기로 일식을 체험하는 시각 장애 학생들
In a place where 1canes are just as common for students as a book sack, teachers at the Louisiana School for the 2visually impaired have to get creative with their lessons.
"So that's the sound of the light from the sun, right? Can I see your hand? We're gonna hold it right over the light sensor like this."
This little blue box is a 3game changer for the blind and visually impaired community. It's called a 'light sound 4device', and it uses the 5process of 6sonification to 7turn the eclipse into something these kids can hear.
"It has a light sensor, so as the eclipse 8occurs and the sunlight 9dims, it changes the light 10intensity into a musical tone."
For many of the students, it's the first time a 11solar eclipse has taken place during their lifetime. And thanks to this technology, they'll never be 12excluded from such a historic event.
"It makes me feel like we are 13inclusive. We are included into everything, which is what we want to do."
Although the cloud cover 14prevented the capital area from experiencing '15totality', students were still in 16awe hearing the different sounds as the sky became darker.
"Being able to hear light instead of see it, I think that's pretty impressive. Before today, I didn't think that was possible."
And it's something they'll never forget.
